There are lots of stories about how the term Black Friday became common place as the marker for the shopping day after Thanksgiving. According to history.com, some say the term “Black Friday” first appeared and was named for the crash of the U.S. gold market on September 24, 1869. in 1869 two Wall Street financiers worked together to buy up as much as they could of the nation’s gold, to drive up the price and sell for profit. On that Friday in September, the conspiracy unravelled and the stock market fell into free-fall, hence the name Black Friday. Another theory behind the name is that after an entire year of operating at a loss (“in the red”) stores would earn a profit (“went into the black”) on the day after Thanksgiving, because holiday shoppers spent so much money on merchandise. There are other stories, but where the name came from doesn’t really mater. What we do know, is that the one-day shopping frenzy has morphed into a four-day event from Friday to Cyber Monday.
